Name after the legendary Milton Erickson, MD, Founder of medical hypnotherapy, the Milton Model was Grinder and Bandlers attempt to codify his language patterns. The result is a useful set of language patterns that tend to induce a trance, or a mild state of inward attention.
When are where can you use the Milton Model?
You can use the Milton Model if you are a hypnotherapist, of course. Outside the context of hypnosis, the Milton Model is simply known as vague language. Vague language is useful to motivate, encourage, inspire, and allow people to fill in the details for themselves.
For example:
I am sure you will do what it takes to get the job done. Everyone will be satisfied, including you!
Details left for the recipient to fill in: How are you sure? What will I do? Which job? Who will be satisfied? How will they be satisfied?
When you allow the recipient to fill in his own details, it is more convincing to him and the encouragement has a chance to take on a life of its own. The recipient makes it his own by filling in his own details.
